UNSW Juniors Take First Step towards 2010 National
23 Nov 2009
A group of the club’s junior players battled the fierce heat at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday 22 November in the first selection competition for the State team to the 2010 National Championships.
With their numbers a little depleted because of various end-of-year activities, the Uni kids still came away with some impressive results.
Foremost among them were Jack Newman and Nina Takenaka who both took gold in the boys 81kg and girls 48kg categories respectively. Close behind came Indra Sadeli, silver in the boys 55kg and Luc Baumgartner also with silver in the boys 73kg.
Other club members to feature in the results were Maxine Germes (bronze, girls 57kg) and Dylan McDermott (bronze, boys 42kg).
In the younger u13yrs division, Matt Peppas took silver in the boys 55kg.
These results point to another strong presence of UNSW members in the State team for 2010.
Coaches on the day Phil Kearney, Phil McDermott and Warren Rosser all commented on the stifling conditions, which tested all competitors. While everyone was affected, some felt the heat more than others, and in some cases this was reflected in their results. Several of the Uni players are still very young, competing against boys and girls who are much older and more experienced.
Hopefully the weather will be more kind when the seniors go round in their tournament on 29 November.
The next selection tournament will be in February 2010
